Don’t abandon animals

Factory farming interests got their way in the House—and now they're coming for the Senate. 

Behind closed doors, Big Pork and its allies in Congress pushed through a dangerous provision in the Farm Bill that would wipe out animal welfare protections across the country.

Buried in the bill is the “Save Our Bacon Act”—language designed to overturn state laws that protect farm animals. That includes California's Proposition 12—a landmark policy that bans the sale of products tied to extreme confinement of mother pigs, egg-laying hens, and veal calves.

We were close to stopping it.

Lawmakers from both parties pushed back against this provision. But when it came down to it, industry lobbyists succeeded in forcing it through the House.

Now the bill is headed to the Senate—and this is our chance to stop it.

This isn't just about animal welfare. It's about whether states have the right to set basic standards and whether voters have any say when powerful industries don't like the outcome.

We can't let them win.

The Senate must keep the Save Our Bacon Act out of its Farm Bill text and reject any Farm Bill that includes provisions to overturn state and local animal agriculture laws.
